When it comes to sleep-related issues, Snoring and Sleep Apnoea are two terms often used interchangeably. However, while they share some similarities, they differ in causes, severity and health implications. Understanding these differences is key to effective prevention and treatment, especially for dental professionals who can play a significant role in managing these conditions.

What is Snoring?

Snoring is the sound caused by the vibration of tissues in the throat during sleep – it occurs when airways are partially obstructed. While occasional snoring can be harmless, chronic snoring might indicate an underlying issue, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Understanding its causes can help in prevention and early intervention.

What is Sleep Apnoea

Sleep Apnoea is a serious sleep disorder characterised by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These pauses can last from a few seconds to a minute and may occur multiple times throughout the night. The most common type is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), where the airway becomes blocked, often due to the relaxation of the throat muscles.

Key Differences between Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?

Not everyone who snores has Sleep Apnoea, but nearly all individuals with Sleep Apnoea snore. The key difference lies in the impact on breathing and health. The main difference lies in the severity and health implications:

  • Snoring: Often a benign annoyance, though it can regularly disrupt sleep for both the snorer and their bed partner.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea: A medical condition with serious health risks, including high blood pressure, heart disease and daytime fatigue.

For dental professionals, MAS appliances provide a non-invasive treatment option that can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life.

Why Should Dental Professionals Get Involved?

As general dental practitioners (GDPs), you are uniquely positioned to identify and manage snoring and Sleep Apnoea. Patients often overlook these conditions, but routine dental visits provide an opportunity for early screening and intervention.
