INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2025: CELEBRATING WOMEN IN DENTISTRY WITH ELEANOR COWLAM
"Always dream big. You are in control of your life and career, nobody else.”
In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, we had the pleasure of speaking with Practice Principal and Dental Hygienist/Therapist, Eleanor Cowlam, founder of Windsor St Dental.
Trainee Dental Nurse to Practice Owner
Eleanor’s career in dentistry began as a trainee dental nurse, a role she took on before pursuing her qualification as a Dental Therapist.
Despite the challenges she faced, including judgement from others, Eleanor was determined to build a successful career in the dental industry.
In 2023, she founded Windsor St Dental with the goal of providing top-tier care to her local community in Burbage, where her family has lived for generations.
"The journey's been amazing. If I had to do it all over again to get to where I am now, I'd do it in a heartbeat."
Breaking Barriers in Dentistry
Eleanor’s path hasn’t been without its challenges, particularly being in a profession traditionally dominated by men.
She faced doubt from others who didn’t see dental therapists as valuable assets in the field.
But Eleanor has proven that perception wrong, not only by excelling in her career but also by opening her own practice.
“It’s been hard, but it’s been the best journey, and there’s still so much more to come.”
Starting Each Day with Purpose
Every morning, Eleanor starts her day with a powerful reminder that each day is an opportunity to grow, achieve, and inspire others.
By embracing this positive outlook, Eleanor continues to push forward and accomplish her goals, proving that determination and self-belief are key to making dreams a reality.
“Every single day is a chance to do your best.”
Eleanor's Passion for Helping Others
A key part of Eleanor’s journey is her desire to help other women in the dental profession.
She often receives messages from fellow female professionals asking for advice on how to open their own practices or take the next step in their careers.
Eleanor’s mentorship goes beyond offering advice. She’s actively supporting other women by providing shadowing opportunities to those looking to build their confidence and take bold steps in advancing their careers.
"I get a lot of people reaching out to me asking for advice. If I can help out at all, then I absolutely will."
Advice for Women in Dentistry
Her advice to others is simple but impactful: "Always dream big. You are capable of your future, and no one can take that away from you."
Eleanor believes that while having a support network is incredibly valuable, ultimately, it’s down to your own drive and determination.
